40 Year Platypus - Festival

The Platypus Theatre was founded in the Wild West of Berlin in the 1980s, together with ATZE Musiktheater, Grips and Theater Strahl, among others. We are proud to have also spent four decades doing cultural work with and for children and young people. We have not only survived this time, but have also grown steadily. Our ensemble consists of 17 performers from over 15 countries. With over 25,000 visitors a year, we are Berlin's largest children's theatre without a permanent venue!

Just like the Australian platypus from which the theatre takes its name, the Platypus Theatre is unique in Berlin's cultural landscape. Even when the theatre was in its ‘infancy’, it was our aim to perform locally and cover the ‘white spots’ of Berlin's districts. Whether in the BKA-Theater Kreuzberg, Haus der Jugend Charlottenburg, ufafabrik Tempelhof, Freizeitforum Marzahn or Gropiusstadt Kulturzentrum Neukölln.
We have already performed at over 30 venues in Berlin and would also like to celebrate our work in and with the Berlin districts. 

Like all children's and youth theatres, we work at the interface between culture and education. We are delighted about so many years of participation by, and work with, young people in this equally unique city.

We will be celebrating all this and much more from 1 July to 3 July with four great plays from our repertoire, an exhibition ‘40 Years of Platypus Theatre’ and a grand gala evening on 3 July 2025.
