December 2016

December is a busy month for us. Most of the shows are booked out but we do have a few seats left for EXPEDITION 3.71 on the 19.12.16 in the Distel, and for THE TORTILLA CURTAIN on the 20.12.16 in the Distel.
Now that Donald Trump is planning to build a bigger and better fence along the U.S.A-Mexico border THE TORTILLA CURTAIN is as relevant as ever. In our play, Kyra says “Damn those Mexicans, why don’t they just round them all up and send them back to Mexico!” It’s hard to believe that Donald Trump is going to try and do this. Perhaps his intentions are all just hot air. Let’s hope so.

31 October 2016

We are looking forward to a very busy November. On the 10th and 11th of November we will perform our brand new play EXPEDITION 3.71 in the BKA Theater in Kreuzberg at 11.00 a.m. There are still some seats available for these performances.

October 2016

The premiere of EXPEDITION 3.71 went really well. The youngest member of the audience was 7 years old, the eldest was 91. The students from the Romain Rolland Gymnasium and the Emil-Fischer-Schule liked the play. Uli Köhler from the DLR gave a great opening speech about the connection between Art and Science and many of our visitors enjoyed posing for a photo behind the life sized astronaut photo. The next performances are on the 10th and 11th of November in the BKA at 11.00 a.m.

Rehearsals for our new play, EXPEDITION  3.71, for senior students are now in full swing in preparation for the premiere on Thursday 13th October at 7 p.m. in the Ufa Fabrik in Tempelhof. The play is relevant for the Abitur theme " Science and technology-Visons of the Future” because it deals with space exploration and the ever increasing likelihood that Astronauts will land on Mars in the not too distant future.

July/ August 2016

Dear English teachers and friends,

We are pleased to present you our new schedule for next season. Please note that SEE YOU LATER NAVIGATOR is only on for a limited season in October and November 2016. The play will be back as from May 2017.

We are optimistic that BETWEEN THE LINES will find its place in the hearts of many more 8th grade teachers and will lead to a regular annual theater visit, as it is with many of the other plays in our repertoire.

We are happy to announce that our funding application for 2017 - 2018 was successful. Thanks to the “Basisförderung” we will be able to produce two new plays in 2017 and 2018. Our English youth theater group (PYT) is up and running. The young people taking part are all 11 years old. The group meets on Saturday mornings from 11-13 hours in Theaterhaus Mitte and is run by Josh Spriggs and Olivia Dean. The group is still open to newcomers. Goodbye Kooky! The KOOKY SHOW will be performed for the very last time on Wednesday June 8th . It’s difficult to stop doing this show because it’s been very popular and teachers are always asking us to do it again. It’s now been running for 16 years and we have lost count of the number of shows we have done.

 May 2016

Having had our feet firmly on the ground in recent years with such plays as The Tortilla Curtain, Blood Knot and Between the Lines, we are looking upwards and into the future with our new project “One Way Mission.” The idea for the play was born out of an article in the Tagesspiegel in 2014 about a Dutch entrepreneur and space freak, Bas Lansdorp, who plans to send people on a one way trip to Mars. He called for volunteers for this risky and dangerous expedition. The response was huge. People from all walks of life, from all over the world applied. Women and men.

February and March - 2016

We will be presenting “The Wizard of Oz… Short and Sweet” in the TUSCH Festival in Podewil, on Wednesday 9th of March at 9.30 a.m. The stars of this show are Mrs. Werdin’s 6th class from the Hermann-Schulz-Primary School in Reinickendorf. Melissa Holroyd, Josh Spriggs and Peter Scollin have been working regularly with the class over the last few months. The kids are very excited about their presentation and especially about speaking English on stage in front of an audience. We can’t possibly present the whole musical, we have decided to concentrate on a few strong scenes and three songs. There will be shadow puppetry as well. This has been a bit of a “Gesamtkunstwerk” as we have collaborated with both the music teacher and the art teacher.

Happy New Year - 2016

Now that the prosecco bottle is dry, the fireworks have fizzled into the distance and the Christmas turkey was so last year, we are well and truly into the swing of 2016.

The start of a New Year is often a time for reflection and a chance to evaluate the past 12 months and for us at Platypus this is no different, we have been reflecting on 2015. We thank everyone who has supported Platypus over the last year, helping us show how English Theatre can be an enjoyable and become a stimulating experience for young people of today.

Here are last year’s statistics:

99 performances in Berlin, seen by 18,571 people.
23 performances on tour, seen by 3,474 people.

Winter Season

In Australia this time of year is often referred to as „the silly season“. We are a bit too busy to be silly as we have 19 performances in the space of 21 days. Most of the performances are in the BKA - Theater in Kreuzberg but we’re also doing a few shows in the Kabarett- Theater Distel in Mitte and the Bali Kino in Zehlendorf.

Quite a few of the plays are sold out, but we still have some tickets left e.g. for our new play BETWEEN THE LINES on the 16th of December in the Kabarett- Theater Distel and on the 17th of December in the BKA Theater.

We have a new colleague in the office, Ronja Hinz. She will be taking care of bookings and lots more.

Dates for the performances from March - July 2016 are now online. The program will be posted out before Christmas.
